General Electric Uses Skillsoft’s Leadership Content to Reskill and Upskill More Than 10,000 U.S. Veterans
GE’s Veterans Leadership Journey initiative offers blueprint for corporate training programs
BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Skillsoft, the global leader in corporate learning, today announced that General Electric (GE), a member of Skillsoft’s Executive Advisory Board, is using Skillsoft’s content to support the company’s Veterans Leadership Journey (VLJ). This GE initiative provides opportunities for continued growth and development, both professionally and personally, through mentorship, training and educational initiatives. Currently, VLJ uses Skillsoft content to reskill and upskill 10,000 employees who are U.S. veterans.
After serving on active duty, workers naturally face challenges when re-entering the workforce. GE has a long history of hiring veterans and enriching their professional lives through the GE Veteran Network. To support this effort, GE partnered with Skillsoft in 2016 to pilot the VLJ to provide a comprehensive training platform for this portion of the employee base, which represents about one in every 10 U.S. employees.
Skillsoft helped the GE team ensure that the learning material was specifically curated and geared toward the veteran community’s needs as they transition to corporate environments. Leveraging Skillsoft’s Leadership Channel and Books content, training included three key topic areas: career progression, leadership style and working environment.
“As we near Veterans Day it’s important to recognize the men and women who served our country and the challenges they face every day as a result of their service. It’s difficult to integrate back into the workforce, while simultaneously developing the necessary skills to advance and add value to an organization,” said Bill Donoghue, chairman and CEO of the Skillsoft Group. “Skillsoft is committed to providing individualized learning content to all types of learners, especially U.S. veterans, and we’re proud to support GE’s Veterans Leadership Journey, which is setting a standard and serving as a blueprint for other corporate training programs.”
After a successful pilot of the VLJ program, GE surveyed employees to understand and evaluate its themes better. The employees reported that Skillsoft’s multi-modal learning tools, which combine short videos and book summaries, actionable exercises and the ability to interact with veteran coaches, are useful. Survey results showed that 85 percent of GE’s veterans experienced great value and career progression as a result of Skillsoft’s leadership and working environment topics. Based on these insights and known talent development needs, the following topics were added in 2017: difficult conversations and conflict management, influence and persuasion, resilience and perseverance, prioritization and delegation, problem solving and decision making, motivating and inspiring others.
“These men and women have made enormous sacrifices for our country. As a global corporation, it is our duty to provide them with the tools they need to adapt to civilian life and hone the skills that are important to their professional careers,” said Sara Ley, Digital Learning and Technology Leader, GE. “Skillsoft has enabled us to identify the best topics and modes of training, and then deliver that content through an easy-to-use and comprehensive program that sets GE – and our employees – up for success.”
